It's November, many of us in southwestern PA can't get enough of this time of the year. We take to our tree stands in hope that we will be luck enough to harvest a mature whitetail buck. But why is this time of the year have hunters frothing at their mouths? It's because it is the peak of the rut. The rut is the time of the year where whitetail doe's go into heat and the bucks chase them around in hopes of breeding next years fawns. While hunters alike are excited about this time of the year, many motorists have a different opinion. The rut takes these deer and sends them into a frenzy making them act as is they are a teenager in love. They begin to run everywhere and leave their normal areas, inevitably crossing a road or two.

With PA having a high deer population it ranks #1 in the country for the most deer related accidents. In 2013 it was estimated that 115,000 accidents occurred due to deer which created over $400 million dollars worth of damage to vehicles. The average deer claim today is around $3,400, expensive isn't it? So the question arises how do we protect ourselves and our vehicles from having a collision with a deer. Here are some helpful hints on what you should do:

1) From dusk until dawn is when deer travel the most.
2) Be aware and take note of where deer cross the road most often.
3) Use your high beams in order to increase visibility along side the road.
4) If a deer crosses in front of you gradually slow down, never spike your breaks.
5) Flash your lights and give a few long horn blasts in attempt to move the deer.
7) If impact is inevitable NEVER SWERVE! Slow down as much as possible and hit the deer. You are much more likely to create more damage to your vehicle, yourself, or someone else if you swerve. Also if you swerve in attempt to miss a deer you would be responsible for paying out your collision deductible     rather than your comprehensive deductible due to the fact that you hit another object rather than the deer.

We hope that you stay safe and one of these helpful hints will help you avoid a collision with a deer. Remember if you do have one of these incidents, please call our office to turn in the claim. We will get your claim turned in right away, after it is turned in you will need to get an appraisal on the damage and speak to your adjuster. If you have rental car coverage you will need to pay for the rental out of your pocket and then turn the receipts in to the adjuster to be reimbursed. Once your vehicle has been repaired you will need to pay the body shop your comprehensive deductible and we will pay for the rest of your bill.
